Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility pack
The Microsoft Office suite of software programs is one
of the most widely used in the world and commonly includes
Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet/calculations) and Microsoft
Word (word processor). Different versions also offer
programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint (presentations), Microsoft
Access (database), Microsoft Outlook (email) and Microsoft
Publisher (publications).
Until
the release of the most recent version (Microsoft Office
2007 for the PC or Microsoft 2008 for the Mac), you could
read and write files between different versions of the software
which normally come out every couple of years. With
the new 2007/2008 versions, this is no longer always the
case.
Microsoft
have since released a
free-to-download tool which will allow users of
earlier versions of the software to read and write files
created in Microsoft Office 2007/2008.
OpenOffice
OpenOffice is a free alternative to the Microsoft Office
suite of programs including a word processor, spreadsheet,
presentation and graphic tools which can be downloaded from
the Internet. The software can also be configured
to read and write files in most Microsoft Office-compliant
file formats (version 2003 and below only, V3 is now available
which offers even more features and compatibility with a
wider range of 3rd party software products.
